Program Overview

Application and Assessment:
When you submit an application form to ProActive Dogs Australia, you will be required to pay a fee of $100 to cover admin costs. After the fee is paid and the application is processed you will be assessed by an Occupational Therapist who will determine your physical and mental capabilities, as well as your suitability for the program.

Puppy Selection:
ProActive Dogs hand selects the puppies on our program. Our qualified trainers assess each dog individually and only choose puppies that are going to succeed as service dogs. This gives dogs on our service dog program a very high chance of passing the public access test (PAT), which all service dogs in NSW are require to pass in order to become fully qualified.

Clients are matched with dogs based on their disability, needs, personality and physical attributes. Don’t worry, our trainers know the best dog for you!

Can my pet dog be my service dog? If you have already have a dog that you would like trained as a service dog, one of our trainers would be happy to come a do an assessment to see whether or not your dog will be suitable for our service dog program.

18-24 months of training (minimum 12 months):
Every week, for 18-24 months (minimum of 12 months training must be completed), the client and dog will attend a training session with a ProActive Dogs’ trainer. The once a week training sessions are all compulsory. In these sessions you will train the dog to perform tasks to mitigate the effect of your disability, as well as obedience training and teach the dog appropriate behaviour in public places.

Public Access Test (PAT):
After a minimum of 12 months training, the client and the dog will undergo the PAT. You will be charged a $100 fee to cover expenses. Once you have successfully passed the PAT you will be given a new service dog vest, an ID card and a certificate that certifies your dog as a service dog. You and your dog are required to retake the PAT annually.
